Stronger companies still trade well, and overall high-yield spreads are tight by historical standards (ICE BofA high-yield OAS in the high-2s to low-3s), but the conversation has shifted toward what happens if things go wrong.

June payrolls came in at just 57,000 (roughly half of what economists expected), yet with inflation still running near 4%, the Warsh Fed is not moving toward rate cuts; if anything, another hike is on the table. That matters most for companies facing debt that comes due in 2026–27: borrowers with looming maturities are already paying a premium, and lenders continue to prefer extending and reworking existing deals rather than forcing a reckoning.

This week’s two headline bankruptcies fit that picture. EchoStar’s DISH DBS unit filed a prepackaged Chapter 11 to deal with a July 1 bond it could not pay while waiting on an AT&T spectrum sale, and TPx Communications filed after a first-lien loan had already come due in May. Both had restructuring agreements locked in with over 90% creditor support before they went to court. Beyond those filings, the bankruptcy docket (First Brands, Rite Aid, BMI OldCo) is moving through routine procedural steps rather than signaling a new wave of failures. The bottom line: things remain orderly, but the risks are getting more attention than the upside.
